Amsterdam is a global city with around 180 nationalities

The city of Amsterdam is rich with history and filled with stories to tell. The name originates from the construction of the dam by the Amstel river, and even though it started out as a modest fishing village, it bloomed into one of the most important ports worldwide during the Dutch Golden Age.

During the 19th and 20th century the city expanded significantly and step by step shaped itself into the beautiful city many now come to admire. The 17th century canals together with the later defense line of Amsterdam has now earned Amsterdam a well deserved spot on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Though Amsterdam is the national capital of the Netherlands, the seat of the Dutch government is in The Hague. However, Amsterdam is the commercial capital of the country and is a well renowned financial center. Additionally, the first stock exchange worldwide was the Amsterdam Stock Exchange.
